Make Your Own Wizard Costume Using Harry Potter Costumes This Halloween!

Take into consideration the following: Black robes, a wand, messy black hair, black round glasses, and a scar in the shape of a lightning bolt on the forehead are all characteristics of this individual. A lightning bolt shaped scar on the forehead, red and gold robes, a broomstick, a tiny golden ball with wings, messy black hair, black round glasses, and a scar on the forehead in the shape of a lightning bolt.

Since the release of the first Harry Potter film in 2001, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, these are the two most common Harry Potter costumes that people dress up as for Halloween. When October 31st rolls around, kids and adults of all ages put on their best versions of Harry Potter’s signature wizard outfit, which has since become a standard costume for the holiday. It was not uncommon to see a dozen different people dressed as Harry Potter, either in their Hogwarts robes or in their Gryffindor Quidditch gear.

Beginning with the plain black robes worn by students at the school, costumes have developed over time to reflect a variety of popular movie characters. Due to the overwhelming success of the Harry Potter film series, an estimated one million fans have expressed an interest in donning costumes based on their preferred characters. A spur-of-the-moment production of a Harry Potter movie could very well be staged right in your own neighborhood, given that so many of the characters are free to roam about.

However, purchasing Harry Potter garb from costume shops often comes with a hefty price tag. The following are some suggestions on how to create your own Harry Potter costumes and dress up like a witch or a wizard.

Find a black graduation gown, and sew a Gryffindor patch on your robe to complete the look of Harry Potter in his school robes. There is a wide variety of patterns for the Gryffindor House patch that can be found on the internet, and if you know how to embroider, you can make your own. If not, then patches with silkscreening will do. In terms of your undergarments, we recommend that you wear black pants with a white long-sleeve polo and a tie with red and gold stripes. Put on a cardigan that is black. Put the finishing touches on your appearance by donning a pair of black round glasses and drawing a scar in the shape of a lightning bolt on your forehead. Remember to bring your wand with you.

  • Quidditch robes: locate a scarlet robe and sew a Gryffindor patch on it in place of the traditional black robe. Put on a pair of khaki pants and a red sweater knitted with a cable pattern for your undergarments. If you can locate pads for your knees and elbows, that would be ideal. Remember to bring your broomstick, as well as the round glasses and lightning scar that have become your signature look. Paint a small Styrofoam ball gold, and then attach yellow pipe cleaner wings to it. This will serve as your Golden Snitch.
  • Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley The process for creating a Hermione Granger costume is identical to that of Harry Potter dressed in his school robes; the only difference is that Ron has bright red hair and a lot of freckles, which may require the use of a wig and an orange marker.  Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger wears school robes that are very similar to those worn by Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. Find a black pleated skirt to wear on the inside and combine it with a long-sleeve button-down polo, a red and gold striped tie, and black knee-high socks. This will be her ensemble. You can finish off your Hermione impression with bushy hair and books.
  • Hogwarts Student – If you don’t want to be Harry, Ron, or Hermione and instead want to be just a regular Hogwarts student, all you have to do is switch the colors of the patches and ties on your uniform. Students in Gryffindor wear ties that are red and gold, students in Slytherin wear ties that are green and silver, students in Ravenclaw wear ties that are blue and bronze, and students in Hufflepuff wear ties that are yellow and black. You can locate the various patterns for the various House crest patches on various fan sites dedicated to the Harry Potter franchise.
